The Indian state of Kerala has reported a second case of Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, after a man returning from the UAE tested positive for the disease. As of September 27, health department officials indicated that the man is currently hospitalised in Ernakulam, and his condition is stable. This follows the state’s first confirmed case just a week earlier, involving a 38-year-old man from Malappuram, who also returned from the UAE.
The initial case in Kerala involved a patient diagnosed with the clade 1b strain of the monkeypox virus, known for its higher virulence and potential for more severe symptoms and complications. This particular strain is noteworthy as it prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare Mpox a ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern.’ The confirmation of this strain marks a significant event, as it is the first of its kind reported in the country.
In light of these developments, State Health Minister Veena George has advised individuals returning to Kerala from abroad to seek medical attention if they exhibit any symptoms associated with Mpox. The health department has taken precautionary measures by preparing isolation wards in 14 hospitals throughout Kerala, ready to manage potential cases should the situation escalate.
Mpox is a viral disease caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus. The virus is classified into two major clades: clade I, which is further divided into subclades Ia and Ib, and clade II, which includes subclades IIa and IIb. The ongoing spread and mutation of the virus necessitate heightened vigilance and public health preparedness.
The emergence of these cases in Kerala underscores the importance of monitoring and managing infectious diseases, particularly those that can pose significant public health risks. The health authorities in the state are working proactively to contain the situation, and the community is urged to remain alert and seek medical assistance when necessary.
