Concerns over the possible shutdown of Kodagu University have sparked strong opposition from the Kodagu University Welfare Committee. In a recent meeting, the committee criticized the government’s consideration of closure due to financial constraints. They emphasized that the university, established two years ago, has 100 acres of land, proper infrastructure, and 25 affiliated colleges. Given the state’s financial health, they argued that the move is unwarranted.

To counter this decision, the committee resolved to send a delegation to meet CM Siddaramaiah and launch a non-partisan campaign to safeguard the institution. VP Shashidhar noted that the university’s vice chancellor has been working with various organizations for funding and development. He added that the closure announcement has already impacted potential financial support. An urgent ad hoc group will be formed to protect the university’s future.

Meanwhile, students and faculty of Hassan University staged protests against its potential closure. Demonstrators boycotted classes and gathered on campus near Kenchattahalli, demanding that the government reconsider its decision. They stressed that shutting down the university would severely impact thousands of students, especially those from economically weaker backgrounds. Given its central location, the institution plays a crucial role in providing higher education opportunities.

With growing resistance from students, faculty, and local leaders, the demand to keep these universities operational is gaining momentum.
