In a move to boost water-based tourism, the Kodagu district administration is evaluating a proposal to introduce kayaking at 10 new locations. Currently, activities like river rafting and kayaking are available only at Dubare and Barapole.
Tourism department deputy director Anitha Bhaskar revealed that proposals have been submitted for kayaking at Hemavathi River, Kodlipet Doddakund, Devastur River near Hattihole, Aivattoklu, Hoddur, Herur, Harangi backwaters, Nakur-Shirangala, Byrampada, and Chikkabettageri. These are under review as per the 2024–29 Karnataka Tourism Policy that encourages adventure water sports. A total of 11 applications are being assessed for feasibility by the district tourism committee.
Currently, Dubare hosts 75 rafting boats and Barapole has 24. Bhaskar mentioned that several resorts have shown interest in offering water activities to guests. She recently inspected Barapole’s amenities and personally conducted a rafting safety check.
At a recent meeting led by Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja and attended by MLA Manthar Gowda, it was mandated that all raft operators must renew their licences and obtain fitness certificates before operating. The committee also cleared proposals to upgrade facilities, including shaded waiting areas, handrails, guide changing rooms, seating, water points, toilets, and surveillance cameras.
The MLA emphasized the need for fitness clearance from GETHNAA and police verification for guides. To draw more visitors, he proposed signage at key road junctions. The DC warned that negligence during rafting could damage the district’s tourism reputation.
