Kodagu’s tourism industry, which had come to a standstill due to heavy rainfall over the past 15 days, is now slowly recovering as the rain subsides. The prolonged downpour in June and July had led to landslides and roadblocks in the Malnad region and flood-like conditions in the coastal areas, prompting local administrations to impose tourism restrictions for safety reasons.
In response to these conditions, the Kodagu district administration had advised tourists to postpone visits due to landslides caused by rainfall on July 2. Though no formal restrictions were enacted, the tragic situation in Wayanad had already dampened the tourism sector across South India.
Historically, Kodagu sees a decline in tourist numbers during the monsoon season, with a gradual rebound post-August 15. However, in recent years, this trend has shifted, with tourists increasingly visiting during the monsoon to experience the region’s lush landscapes and waterfalls. June this year saw a strong influx of visitors, suggesting a promising monsoon season.
Zaheer Ahmed, Vice-President of the Kodagu Hotels Association, highlighted the widespread impact on local businesses dependent on tourism, including taxi drivers, bike rental owners, and street vendors. The easing of rain has led to a surge in bookings for the upcoming weekend, signaling a hopeful recovery for the tourism industry.
Tourists, eager to plan trips, are expected to boost local tourism as the restrictions are lifted and the region welcomes visitors once again.
