Madikeri: In a story of dedication and grassroots involvement, Praveen, an auto driver and a three-time member of the Guddehosur Gram Panchayat (GP) from the Madapatna ward, has been elected unopposed as the president of the GP. This marks his first tenure as president, taking over following the resignation of the previous president, Rukmini.
The GP comprises 18 members, 15 of whom unanimously supported Praveen’s election. Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer Parameshwarappa instructed Panchayat Development Officer Sumesh to appoint Praveen as acting president under the Panchayat Raj Act until his formal installation.
Praveen expressed his surprise and gratitude for the position, saying, “I got this position effortlessly. It was beyond my imagination.” He credits his fifteen years of panchayat experience and successful collaborations with previous administrators as vital preparation for his new role.
Son of D. Kushalappa from Madapatna, Praveen was encouraged to join public service by GM Manikumar, the brother-in-law of former Karnataka Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda, during a 2010 visit to the village.
Praveen now lives with his mother, wife, and four-year-old son. His wife contributes to the household by rearing cows and supplying milk to nearby households. With a focus on improving cleanliness and development across the panchayat, Praveen has temporarily stepped away from driving his autorickshaw to prioritize public service.
His commitment to the panchayat’s progress and well-being demonstrates the potential of community leaders emerging from humble beginnings to drive meaningful change.
