Madikeri: Dr. Sharan Prakash R. Patil, Minister for Medical Education and Skill Development, recently visited the Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences (KoIMS) and announced significant healthcare initiatives for Kodagu. During his visit to the District Hospital, Dr. Patil revealed plans to establish a dedicated heart examination center in Kodagu, addressing the urgent need for cardiac care facilities locally. Currently, residents travel to Mangaluru, Mysuru, or Bengaluru for such specialized treatments.

Speaking to reporters, Dr. Patil highlighted the imminent installation of a new MRI machine at the District Hospital, which is set to commence public service within 45 days.

Acknowledging discussions with local doctors, administrators, and MLA Dr. Manthar Gowda regarding the cardiac care center, Dr. Patil assured that the proposal would be included in the upcoming State budget and implemented through Public-Private Partnership. He emphasized ongoing efforts to complete the new hospital building at the District Hospital premises in Madikeri to alleviate the strain caused by high patient volumes, including those from neighboring districts seeking medical care in Madikeri.

Regarding infrastructure development, Dr. Patil outlined the need for Rs. 55 crore to Rs. 60 crore to finish the 300-bed Women and Children Hospital in Madikeri. He expressed confidence in securing these funds through the Finance Department for the construction of remaining floors.

Addressing healthcare staffing challenges, the Minister detailed plans to recruit more doctors, particularly young professionals, to serve in smaller districts like Madikeri. He also mentioned proposals to introduce postgraduate medical courses to bolster healthcare capabilities locally.

During his inspection of ongoing projects at the District Hospital, Dr. Patil assured swift action to fill doctor vacancies and prioritize staffing for critical care units.

Key officials including Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja, Zilla Panchayat CEO Varnith Negi, KoIMS Dean Dr. Vishal, and District Health Officer Satish Kumar participated in the visit.
