Madikeri: Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja underscored the importance of ensuring safety at all tourist destinations, homestays, and hotels in the district. He mandated that unregistered homestays complete their registration with the tourism department, emphasizing a streamlined process with swift document verification.

To enhance security, he directed the installation of CCTV cameras, deployment of Home Guards, and improved night lighting at tourist hotspots. Special focus was given to Chelavara, Irpu, Dubare, and border areas. Strict legal action will be taken against illegal homestays engaging in unlawful activities.

Homestay owners are accountable for tourist safety, especially in remote areas, and must adhere to guidelines. Authorities were instructed to upgrade electrical infrastructure and strengthen safety protocols. Women’s and children’s security at tourist sites was highlighted as a priority.

Tourism department deputy director Anita Bhaskar reported that out of 3,500 homestays, only 2,269 are registered. She called for improved digital services, while Homestay Association representatives urged greater awareness of safety measures. Officials, including tahsildars and local leaders, attended the meeting.
