Kodagu district has experienced an unusual temperature rise this August, with the mercury crossing 30°C for the first time in the second week of the month. On Wednesday, the district recorded a maximum temperature of 31°C, marking a significant deviation from the typical August temperatures, which usually range between 25°C and 28°C.
Historically, Kodagu has seen temperatures reach 30°C in August only twice, in 2013 and 2020, but these instances occurred in the last week of the month. This year’s temperature spike began earlier, showing a notable increase from August 9.
Kodagu, known for its cooler monsoon temperatures and misty conditions, is experiencing an unusual shift. Residents, accustomed to cold weather and using warm clothes, are now using fans due to the unexpected heat. This temperature anomaly follows heavy rains in July, with Sampaje hobli receiving 15 cm of rainfall last Tuesday.
Madikeri city recorded a high of 31.1°C, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), while AccuWeather reported 32°C. IMD Bengaluru’s Director, C.S. Patil, attributed the heatwave to dry conditions in the Arabian Sea affecting local weather patterns.
The sudden rise in temperature, coupled with ongoing rainfall, reflects a broader shift in Kodagu’s climate, marking a departure from its traditionally cooler August weather.
