A woman tourist from the United States was allegedly sexually assaulted at a homestay in Kutta, Kodagu district, leading to the arrest of two accused persons.

Police said a case has been registered at Kutta Police Station and both accused have been produced before a local court, which remanded them to judicial custody.

Embassy alerted authorities

According to sources, the survivor approached the United States Embassy after the incident. Embassy officials then informed local authorities, following which legal action was initiated.

The woman had reportedly arrived at the homestay for a three-day stay. The incident is said to have taken place last week.

Victim under treatment

Police said the survivor is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mysuru.

R N Bindu Mani confirmed that two persons were arrested and the investigation is continuing.

Leaders condemn incident

CT Ravi condemned the alleged crime, calling it deeply shameful and unacceptable. He said the incident harmed India’s image and values of hospitality.

G Parameshwara stated that standard operating procedures had been circulated and homestay operators must follow regulations and possess valid licences.

Tourism safety concerns rise

The incident has raised fresh concern over tourist safety, verification processes and compliance standards at private stays and homestays.
