In two separate incidents, the Karnataka Police have filed FIRs against individuals accused of spreading misinformation and anti-national sentiments on social media in connection with the Pahalgam terror attack and ongoing India-Pakistan tensions.
In Kolar, Muneer Khan Qureshi, a local YouTuber and chicken shop owner, is under investigation for uploading a video that claimed the Pahalgam terror attack—which killed 26—was orchestrated by the central government to polarise Hindu voters ahead of the Bihar elections. The Galpete Police filed a suo motu FIR against him for inciting communal unrest and promoting disharmony. The video has since been taken down, and investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, in Vijayapura, Tasaud Farooqui Sheik, a student at Al-Ameen Medical College, faces charges for a social media post perceived as pro-Pakistan. Her message warned people in Pakistan and disputed regions to avoid military zones and ended with “May Allah protect us from India,” along with a Pakistani flag. Following public outrage and an FIR under Sections 152 and 197(3)(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, she issued a public apology, affirming her loyalty to India and vowing not to repeat the mistake.
Police urge the public to use social platforms responsibly, especially during heightened national tensions.
