Kolar: Intense rainfall has caused widespread damage to agricultural land in Karnataka’s Kolar district, affecting an estimated 304 hectares of farmland. The mango belt, a key contributor to the region’s economy, has suffered the most, with 200 hectares of mango orchards damaged. The remaining 104 hectares include various horticultural crops, such as bananas and vegetables.
In the Basavanatta outskirts, farmer Vijay Kumar reported a total loss of his 1.5-acre cabbage field, flattened by the heavy showers. After a brief respite from the rain, farmers returned to their fields only to find their crops devastated. The emotional and financial toll has led to urgent appeals for government assistance.
According to Horticulture Department officials, the preliminary damage assessment stands at approximately ₹1.2 crore ($145,000). The data has been submitted to the district administration, which has pledged to compensate affected growers following a full survey and verification process.
“We are preparing detailed field reports and ensuring prompt submission to facilitate disbursement of relief funds,” a horticulture official confirmed.
The mango and banana growers—many of whom rely solely on seasonal yields—fear long-term repercussions if support is delayed. The Kolar mango, known for its unique taste and aroma, has a significant market value, both locally and outside the state.
As the damage assessment continues, authorities are also exploring preventive measures to shield horticultural zones from future extreme weather events. Farmers are hopeful the compensation will arrive swiftly to mitigate their losses.
