A tragic incident unfolded in Pujarahalla village of Karnataka’s Kolar district when 21-year-old Karthik lost his life after consuming five bottles of alcohol in one sitting without water, reportedly due to a ₹10,000 wager with a friend, Venkata Reddy. The fatal drinking challenge took place on Sunday night, with Karthik consuming the entire quantity undiluted as per the bet’s conditions.
Soon after, he collapsed and was taken to a nearby hospital, where medical efforts failed to revive him. The Mulbagal police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances of the death.
Karthik’s death has cast a pall of gloom in the village, particularly as he had recently become a father—his wife gave birth to their daughter just nine days prior to the incident.
The Medical Risks:
Experts warn that rapid and excessive alcohol consumption is extremely dangerous. Without water, alcohol’s dehydrating effects become more severe. Key risks include:
- Alcohol Poisoning: A sudden spike in blood alcohol levels can suppress vital body functions such as breathing and heart rate.
- Dehydration: Alcohol acts as a diuretic, and without water, fluid loss increases, risking kidney failure.
- Liver Toxicity: The liver processes alcohol slowly; overconsumption results in a toxic buildup.
- Nervous System Depression: Overdose can lead to coma or death by shutting down the central nervous system.
- Electrolyte Imbalance: Alcohol affects potassium and sodium levels, which can trigger cardiac issues.
Authorities have urged people to avoid dangerous alcohol-related dares and act responsibly to prevent further tragedies.
