Koppal Police Officer Suspended for Unauthorized Release of Private Mobile Conversations
In a shocking development, the Koppal police have filed an FIR against Head Constable C.H. Koteppa, 44, from the Cyber, Economic, and Narcotics Crime Department. The officer has been suspended by the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Koppal district and is facing charges under the IT Act for unauthorized disclosure of private mobile conversations.
The FIR reveals that Koteppa disclosed 145 mobile call records and cell ID information from nine mobile towers. This information, including chat logs and telephone conversations, was reportedly shared with various clients. The police are investigating who benefited from this breach and the extent of payments made to the accused constable.
The case came to light when a conversation involving a client in a legal matter was leaked. The aggrieved party lodged a complaint, leading to an internal investigation. Senior police officials initiated a suo motu case, uncovering the involvement of one of their own.
“This is a first-of-its-kind case for us,” said a police officer. “We have never encountered a situation where a police official has misused their position to share private data. The constable was allegedly in contact with lawyers, providing them with updates on their opponents’ conversations.”
The investigation is also exploring whether private conversations, particularly those of couples, were leaked to social media. Additionally, it has been revealed that Koteppa shared sensitive police department information, including details about new tenders, development funds, and uniforms, with local social activists and lawyers, charging between Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000 for each instance.
