The proposed expansion of Baldota’s BSPL steel plant in Koppal, once praised for economic growth, has ignited fierce resistance from locals. Residents fear worsening pollution as the district already struggles with smog and dust from existing industries. With the announcement of a 3.5 crore metric tonne plant just 8 km from the city, opposition has intensified.

Environmental concerns have united activists and villagers under the Koppal Parisara Hitarakshana Samiti, which has called for a district-wide bandh on February 24. The movement has gained momentum with support from Abhinava Gavisiddeshwara Swamiji of Gavi Mutt. Critics accuse elected officials of failing to protect public health, with BJP MLC Hemalatha Nayak urging collective action against pollution.

BJP leader Dr. Basavaraj Kyavatar warned that another steel plant would make Koppal “a living hell,” while JD(S) leader CV Chandrasekhar was the first to file a petition opposing the project. Public outrage surged after the Gavi Mutt seer backed the cause, leading to widespread social media support for the bandh.

Under mounting pressure, MLA Raghavendra Hitnal, MP Rajasekhar Hitnal, and district minister Shivaraj Tangadagi have engaged with various groups in an attempt to address grievances.

Though the Rs 54,000 crore project promises 15,000 jobs, residents stress that economic gains must not come at the cost of public health. Koppal already hosts over 200 industries, including 20 steel plants, which have severely impacted air quality.
