Koppal: A team from the Department of Mines and Geology was assaulted by a group involved in unlawful sand extraction near Chikkasindogi village. The attack unfolded on Friday afternoon when officials attempted to clamp down on the illicit activity at Hirehalla.

Sachin Gauripur, along with two colleagues, reached the site to investigate unauthorized mining. Upon stopping a tractor transporting sand without permits, they instructed the driver to dump the load. This enraged eight individuals working at the location, who turned aggressive and physically attacked Gauripur, leaving him injured. He was immediately shifted to the district hospital for medical care.

Illegal sand extraction remains rampant in the region, allegedly operating with the support of influential figures. Despite periodic crackdowns, the trade continues to thrive, reportedly under political patronage.

Following the assault, senior geologist Rasheed registered a formal complaint at the Alawandi police station, seeking action against those responsible. However, sources claim law enforcement is reluctant to act due to the attackers’ links with a powerful political leader.

Local activist Ishappa Madinur, who has previously opposed illegal mining, lamented that such violent confrontations are becoming increasingly frequent. He urged authorities to enforce stricter regulations and protect officials working to curb the menace.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing audacity of illegal miners and the challenges faced by enforcement agencies.
