A recent survey conducted by Transistor reveals that 76% of Gen Z podcast enthusiasts favor audio-only formats, casting doubt on the industry’s increasing push toward video podcasting. Insights were drawn from responses of over 100 Gen Z listeners, spotlighting shifts in their platform choices and consumption habits.
Platform preferences:
Spotify remains the go-to app, with 56% naming it their preferred platform, marking a rise from 47% in 2021. YouTube usage has doubled over the years, currently standing at 21%, though it still trails behind Spotify. Meanwhile, Apple Podcasts has seen a steady drop, with only 10% opting for it now, compared to 16% four years ago.
Audio dominance:
Despite the video boom, only 6% prioritize video podcasts, while 18% switch between both formats. Interestingly, YouTube audiences lean more towards video, with 52% saying they watch podcasts some or all of the time.
Listening behavior:
A majority—59%—tune in at home via smartphones or tablets. Others listen while commuting (12%), walking or cycling (10%), or driving (9%). Surprisingly, just 3% consume podcasts on TVs, challenging the belief in connected TV’s podcast surge.
Genre favorites:
Unexpectedly, fiction and horror podcasts resonate strongly, with titles like Welcome to Night Vale and The Magnus Archives frequently cited. Popular shows such as The Joe Rogan Experience and The Daily also feature prominently.
