A remarkable story of perseverance has emerged from Mayurbhanj, Odisha, where Chakradhar Rana, affectionately known as the ‘Papad Man’, has spent over 50 years peddling papads through the streets of Udala to support his family. Whether it’s scorching heat, pouring rain, or gusty winds, Rana’s dedication remains unshaken.

Rana covers an impressive 30 to 40 kilometers daily, carefully balancing a basket of crispy papads on his head, making his way to the local market. Despite his advanced age, he continues to sell the snack for a modest price of Rs 10, proving that age is no barrier to his determination.

His journey began more than five decades ago when he sold papads for as little as 5 and 10 paise each. Today, he sources his papads from Kolkata and sells around 1,000 pieces every day. He remains immensely proud of his enduring profession, and his integrity has earned him the admiration of his community.

Local resident Rabin Mohanty reminisces about his childhood, recalling how Rana, with his distinctive white shirt, half pants, and papad basket, became a well-known figure in Udala. “Everyone loves him as ‘Papad Wala,’” Mohanty shared. What stands out about Rana is not just his diligence, but also his courteous nature, making him a beloved character in around 70 to 80 markets in the region.
