The naughty siesta is a modern phenomenon that has become a cheeky, post-pandemic tradition for many working from home. Unlike a power nap, which lasts a mere 20 minutes or less, the naughty siesta can stretch for much longer—depending on just how naughty you’re feeling.

Now, don’t confuse it with a siesta royale (which I’m assuming involves other kinds of fun), as this siesta is simply a nap your employer doesn’t know about. Typically taken after lunch, it’s a sneaky, mid-workday break to recharge, often between 3 pm and 4 pm.

Why is it naughty? Well, being unconscious doesn’t exactly scream productivity. And while some may dream of innovative digital marketing solutions during these naps (or maybe just dream of random nonsense), the reality is that most people aren’t exactly proud of this behavior. A recent survey revealed that only 10% of Britons admit to taking naps on company time when not in the office.

But don’t worry—what the boss doesn’t know won’t hurt them, right? However, with a push for more office attendance, the reign of the home-office nap might be coming to an end. Some bosses are even installing cameras to track office attendance, which could make our beloved naps much more challenging.

Isn’t it time we normalize naps for all employees? Spain’s siesta tradition has long championed this, though less than 40% of Spaniards still take them today. Despite the health benefits of a short nap—such as improving energy levels—anything longer than 25 minutes risks leaving you groggy.

So, while Zoom meetings might be snooze-worthy, maybe it’s time to take advantage of those long-winded calls before the slumber party is over.
