TikTok’s new travel trend, check-in chicken, is making waves among frequent flyers. This strategy involves waiting until the last minute to check in for flights in hopes of snagging premium seats, such as extra legroom or exit row aisles, which are often left unbooked by airlines.
Chelsea Dickenson, a travel expert, highlights that budget airlines like Wizz Air and Ryanair often allocate undesirable seats early, encouraging passengers to pay for upgrades. By waiting, travelers might secure better seats for free. However, this risky tactic isn’t foolproof.
Key warnings:
- Overbooked flights might leave late check-ins without a seat.
- With passenger loads at 94% capacity on many flights, availability is tight.
This follows other airline innovations like American Airlines’ efforts to curb gate lice—passengers crowding the boarding gate prematurely.
