Majority of Democrats Back Imprisoning Elon Musk: Poll
A new survey by Rasmussen Reports and The Heartland Institute has sparked intense national debate, revealing that 54% of likely U.S. voters would support a hypothetical law to imprison Elon Musk for his role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), created under President Donald Trump’s second term to combat government waste. Of those, 39% say they would strongly support such a law. Meanwhile, 36% oppose the idea, and 10% remain unsure.
The data exposes sharp partisan and ideological divides. Among Democrats, support for Musk’s imprisonment surges to 71%, with 80% of self-identified liberals agreeing. In contrast, 54% of Republicans and 57% of conservatives oppose the measure. Independents are more split: 52% support it, 34% oppose, and 17% are undecided.
Critics on the right, including Heartland Institute senior fellow Justin Haskins, claim the poll highlights a disturbing trend of “political retribution” replacing rational discourse. “This is a shocking indictment of the modern left… who would rather punish innovation than fix broken systems,” Haskins said.
Beyond imprisonment, 48% of voters support banning Musk from government service altogether, while 38% oppose and 14% remain undecided. Again, Democrats overwhelmingly support a ban (68%), while Republicans largely oppose it (59%).
Musk’s favorability has dropped slightly to 42%, down from 45% in March. 52% now view him unfavorably, including 83% of Democrats and 63% of women. His strongest support comes from Republicans (77%) and men (51%).
The survey also suggests that political polarization has worsened during Trump’s second term, with many blaming Trump’s rhetoric and policies. The poll, conducted April 30–May 4, 2025, included 1,067 likely voters and has a margin of error of ±3%.
