In response to increasing public anxiety over illegal IPL and online betting, Mandya police have launched a special task force to combat the issue. With the IPL season in full swing, residents have demanded stricter enforcement, especially after reports of suicides linked to betting losses.

To curb this menace, police have intensified their monitoring of online platforms, carried out surprise raids on suspected betting hubs, and initiated legal action against offenders. Authorities urge citizens to report any suspicious activities to aid the crackdown.

Mandya SP Mallikarjun Baladandi reaffirmed the department’s firm stance, stating, “IPL betting is a serious concern in our district. We have formed specialized teams, conducted multiple raids, and registered several cases. Strict action will be taken against anyone involved in or promoting illegal betting.” He also warned that hotels, clubs, and individuals facilitating such activities will face legal consequences.

The tragic suicide of a young man in Budunur village due to betting-related debts has further highlighted the issue. Chandrashekar Shivalli, president of Karnataka Rajya Raita Sangha (Ekkikarana), lauded the police initiative but urged that statewide action be taken to prevent gambling addiction, especially in rural areas. He also called for a complete ban on online gambling and card games, questioning their legality.
