Mangaluru: Students Set Up Coconut Shell Feeders to Help Birds Beat the Heat
Mangaluru: As the summer sun blazes over coastal Karnataka, not only humans but also birds and animals struggle to cope with the rising temperatures. In a heartwarming gesture, students of Carmel High School, Modankap, Bantwal, have stepped up to provide relief through their Chinv Chinv (‘Chirp Chirp’) campaign.
For the past five years, these young environmentalists have been placing coconut shell feeders filled with water and food grains across their school campus and homes. Spearheaded by science teacher Roshan Pinto, the initiative gives students hands-on exposure to nature beyond textbooks.
Out of 250 students, 117 actively participate in this eco-friendly project, ensuring water is available at 252 locations. The simple yet effective feeders are placed on trees and frequented spots, attracting birds and other creatures in need of hydration. “Birds quench their thirst and also nibble on the grains. Interestingly, even snakes have been spotted drinking from the coconut shells,” Pinto shared.
To sustain the effort during school vacations, teachers and staff take responsibility for refilling the feeders. Meanwhile, students are encouraged to monitor their home-based stations and capture photos of visiting birds.
The school’s commitment to sustainability extends further—last monsoon, under the Green Future Association, students dug 117 percolation pits to recharge groundwater.
