Puttur: An 11-year-old boy sustained injuries after a Tata Ace goods vehicle overturned near Kapu, close to Sediyapu, on Wednesday, July 23. The accident has once again drawn attention to safety concerns on the stretch, where recently completed road works have reportedly left dangerous roadside conditions due to unfinished shoulder and divider construction.

The injured child has been identified as Mohammed Ameen (11), son of Abdul Majeed, a resident of Sanyasigudde in Koila. He was travelling in the goods vehicle when the mishap occurred.

Vehicle overturned after slipping off road edge

According to information available, Abdul Majeed was driving the Tata Ace from Uppinangady towards Puttur when the accident took place near Kapu.

The vehicle reportedly veered off the road after its wheels slipped off the edge of the carriageway. Unable to regain control, the driver saw the Tata Ace overturn beside the road.

Mohammed Ameen, who was accompanying his father in the vehicle, suffered injuries in the accident. The extent of his injuries has not been officially disclosed. No other injuries were reported in the incident.

Incomplete road works blamed for safety risk

Local residents said the accident spot has become hazardous following recent concrete road works.

According to them, while the concrete carriageway has been completed, soil has not yet been filled along the road shoulders. This has created a steep drop along the edges of the road, making it difficult for motorists to safely recover if their vehicles move off the carriageway.

Residents also pointed out that divider construction on the stretch remains incomplete. They said the absence of fully finished roadside infrastructure increases the risk of accidents, particularly for drivers who lose control even briefly or attempt to avoid oncoming vehicles.

Locals have urged the concerned authorities to complete the pending work at the earliest and ensure the road is made safe for commuters before additional accidents occur.

Police register case

Following the incident, a case was registered at the Puttur Traffic Police Station. Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the accident.

Officials are expected to examine whether road conditions contributed to the mishap in addition to other possible factors.
