Mangaluru: A 21-year-old youth who suffered critical injuries in a road accident on Ganesh Chaturthi night was declared brain dead at a hospital in Deralakatte, following which his family consented to donate his organs.
The deceased has been identified as Varshith Kulal, younger son of Gopal and Vedavathi, residents of Ayere Bettu in Kuthar. Varshith was unmarried and worked in fabrication.
Head-on collision leaves youth critically injured
The accident occurred at around 7.30 pm on Monday when Varshith was travelling by motorcycle from Kuthar towards his home.
According to the information available, a scooter travelling from Ranipura collided head-on with his motorcycle near Durga Auto Works, close to the Koragajja Adikshetra Katte in Kuthar.
The impact threw Varshith onto the road, leaving him with severe head injuries. He was immediately shifted to Yenepoya Hospital in Deralakatte for treatment.
Despite medical efforts, his condition remained critical. Hospital authorities officially declared him brain dead on Wednesday.
Family consents to organ donation
Following medical advice, Varshith’s parents consented to organ donation, turning their grief into an opportunity to save the lives of other patients awaiting transplants.
Hospital sources said requests for Varshith’s kidneys, liver, heart and lungs had been received from various hospitals.
The organs are scheduled to be transported on Wednesday through a zero-traffic corridor to facilitate their timely transfer to the recipient hospitals.
The family’s decision comes at a deeply difficult time as they cope with the loss of their young son. Organ donation can allow vital organs from a brain-dead donor to help patients suffering from serious organ failure.
Scooter rider also injured
The scooter rider, identified as Dheeraj, also sustained grievous injuries in the collision.
He is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. Further details about his condition were not immediately available.
The accident has left both families affected by the serious consequences of the collision.
Traffic police investigate
Varshith is survived by his parents and an elder brother.
The Mangaluru South Traffic Police have registered a case in connection with the accident and launched an investigation.
The police are examining the circumstances that led to the head-on collision near Kuthar and are expected to gather further details as part of the investigation.
Meanwhile, arrangements have been made for the transportation of Varshith’s donated organs through the zero-traffic corridor, ensuring that they can reach the respective hospitals within the required timeframe.
