A 7-foot python was successfully rescued from a 25-foot rain tree at Kadri Park, Mangaluru, on Sunday. Wildlife rescuer Bhuvan Devadiga shared details of the operation, explaining that it began after a small boy spotted the snake on Saturday. The initial call was received by rescuer Ajay, who then transferred it to Devadiga due to his unavailability.
The team initially opted to monitor the python, hoping it would leave the tree on its own. However, given the park’s frequent visitors, including children and walkers, concerns about safety led to an immediate rescue. Devadiga arrived at the scene around 8:30 pm and found the python descending the tree. The snake’s position made the rescue challenging as its branch stretched over both the park and the road.
To help with the rescue, Devadiga called in fellow rescuers Prashamsa Bhandary and Rakesh. Although the team tried to use a stick to coax the snake down, it climbed higher. Considering the heavy public movement and light pollution due to Ganeshotsava celebrations, they decided to wait until Sunday morning to proceed.
By 8:30 am, fire and emergency services were informed, and a fire engine was arranged. The rescue operation commenced at 9 am with the help of fire officers. Using a ladder, Devadiga pruned branches to allow the python to slip safely into a bag. The snake was later released into its natural habitat. “Although the python might have returned on its own, we acted due to public safety concerns,” Devadiga said.
