Mangaluru: In a significant breakthrough, the Mangaluru North police have arrested a warrant accused who had been absconding for nearly two years in connection with a long-pending criminal case. The accused, identified as Goods Munir alias T P Munir alias Ahmed (59), was apprehended from his rented residence in Kulshekar on April 25.
According to police officials, the accused is a resident of Goods Road in the Bunder area of Mangaluru and had been evading arrest despite repeated efforts by law enforcement authorities. His arrest brings progress to a case that has been pending before the court for several years.
Case background and charges
The case against Munir dates back to 1998 and was registered at the Mangaluru North police station under Crime No. 291/1998. The charges include serious offences under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy property), and 149 (unlawful assembly with a common object) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Police sources stated that the case had been under trial for a prolonged period and is currently pending before the Third Additional District and Sessions Court in Mangaluru under Sessions Case (SC) No. 68/2024. Despite being required to appear before the court, the accused failed to comply with summons and continued to remain absconding.
Warrant issued after failure to appear
Due to Munir’s continued absence from court proceedings, the sessions court had issued a non-bailable warrant against him. Authorities confirmed that he had been deliberately evading legal processes for nearly two years, making it difficult for investigators to track his whereabouts.
Police teams had reportedly been monitoring leads and conducting periodic searches to locate him. The breakthrough came when officials received credible information about his stay in Kulshekar, leading to a targeted operation.
Arrest operation and custody
Acting on specific intelligence, officers and staff of the Mangaluru North police station conducted a raid at the rented house where the accused was residing. He was taken into custody without incident and subsequently produced before the court on the same day.
Following the court proceedings, the judge ordered that the accused be remanded to judicial custody. Police officials indicated that further legal procedures in the case will now proceed without delay.
Significance of the arrest
The arrest highlights the continued efforts of the Mangaluru police to track down absconding accused persons and ensure that long-pending cases are brought to justice. Officials emphasised that no accused, regardless of how long they evade the law, will be beyond the reach of the legal system.
Legal experts note that cases involving serious charges such as rioting and arson often face delays due to the non-appearance of accused individuals. The successful arrest in this instance is expected to help expedite the trial process and bring closure to the matter.
Conclusion
With the arrest of Goods Munir, authorities have taken a crucial step towards ensuring accountability in a decades-old case. The development underscores the importance of sustained police vigilance and judicial oversight in upholding the rule of law. As the case resumes in court, further proceedings are expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the original incident and lead to its eventual resolution.
