Moodbidri: Police in Dakshina Kannada district have arrested an accused who had been evading court proceedings for nearly four years, bringing an end to a prolonged manhunt. The individual, identified as K Abdul Basheer alias Arga Basheer (50), was taken into custody on April 18 following a tip-off regarding his whereabouts.
According to police sources, Basheer had multiple cases registered against him across Dakshina Kannada and Chikkamagaluru districts. Despite repeated summons, he failed to appear before the court for trial, prompting authorities to issue a non-bailable arrest warrant against him.
Background of the case
Basheer, a resident of Arga house in Tenkamijaru village, had allegedly been involved in more than 17 criminal cases. These include offences booked under the Cow Slaughter Prohibition Act and the Indian Arms Act, among others. Officials stated that his repeated absence from court proceedings had significantly delayed the legal process in several pending cases.
After evading authorities for years, Basheer reportedly abandoned his residence in Tenkamijaru and moved with his family to a rented house in Parlia, near BC Road. Investigators believe that he had been frequently shifting locations to avoid detection, making it difficult for law enforcement agencies to trace him.
Arrest operation
Acting on credible intelligence inputs, a police team launched a targeted operation to locate the accused. After verifying his presence at the rented accommodation in Parlia, officers conducted a swift raid and successfully apprehended him without incident.
Police officials confirmed that the arrest was the result of sustained surveillance and coordination between different police units. “The accused had been absconding for nearly four years. Based on reliable information, we tracked his movements and secured his arrest,” an officer involved in the operation said.
Following his arrest, Basheer was produced before the court, where further legal proceedings are underway. Authorities have indicated that efforts will continue to ensure that all pending cases against him are brought to trial without further delay.
Multiple cases across districts
The arrest highlights the extent of Basheer’s alleged criminal involvement across multiple jurisdictions. Cases registered against him span two districts, indicating a pattern of activities that drew the attention of law enforcement agencies over time.
Officials noted that the charges include violations under laws related to animal slaughter as well as possession of illegal arms. While detailed investigation reports are yet to be made public, police sources emphasised that the seriousness and number of cases necessitated urgent action.
The prolonged period during which Basheer remained untraceable also raised concerns about gaps in enforcement and tracking mechanisms. However, authorities maintain that persistent efforts and timely intelligence ultimately led to his capture.
Police reiterate commitment to law enforcement
The successful arrest has been viewed as a significant step in ensuring accountability and reinforcing the rule of law. Police officials reiterated their commitment to tracking down absconding accused persons and ensuring that they face due legal process.
They also urged individuals with pending cases to cooperate with legal proceedings rather than attempting to evade the system. “Absconding only delays justice and invites stricter action. We will continue to act firmly against such offenders,” officials stated.
Conclusion
The arrest of K Abdul Basheer marks the end of a prolonged evasion from law enforcement and the judicial system. With more than 17 cases pending against him, his custody is expected to expedite legal proceedings that had been stalled for years. The case also underscores the importance of coordinated policing and sustained vigilance in tracking absconders and upholding justice.
