Mangaluru: The Panambur police have arrested a theft accused who had been absconding for the past six years after allegedly evading court proceedings in connection with a mobile shop burglary case reported in 2018.
The arrested accused has been identified as Parul Hussain Laskar alias Parul, aged 34, a native of Cachar district in Assam.
According to police officials, the accused was wanted in connection with a theft case registered at the Panambur police station after a gang allegedly broke into a mobile phone shop named ‘Pooja Mobiles’ located in Kudumbur in Baikampady and escaped with cash and valuables worth approximately Rs 2.17 lakh.
The burglary had taken place in 2018 and involved the theft of mobile phones, accessories, and cash from the establishment. Following the investigation, police had booked the accused and initiated legal proceedings in the matter.
Accused allegedly skipped court hearings
Police stated that Parul Hussain Laskar had deliberately failed to appear before the court during the trial proceedings related to the theft case. After repeatedly remaining absent from hearings, the accused allegedly went into hiding to avoid arrest and legal action.
Due to his continuous absence, the court had issued a warrant against him. Since then, police teams had been attempting to trace his whereabouts, but the accused reportedly managed to evade arrest for several years.
Officials said the accused frequently changed locations to avoid detection and remained outside Karnataka for a considerable period.
Arrested in Manjeshwar after police operation
Acting on instructions from senior officials, the Panambur police intensified efforts to locate the absconding accused. A special team led by Panambur police inspector Saleem Abbas gathered information regarding the suspect’s movements and eventually tracked him down in Manjeshwar in neighbouring Kerala.
The police team successfully apprehended the accused on Monday, May 11, ending his six-year period of absconding. Following the arrest, the accused was brought to Mangaluru and produced before the court for further legal proceedings.
Police officials stated that the operation was conducted smoothly without any untoward incidents.
Police team praised for successful operation
The arrest operation was carried out under the supervision and guidance of inspector Saleem Abbas. The team involved in tracing and apprehending the accused included head constables Naveen Chandra and Syed Imtiyaz, along with civil police constables Rakesh and Vinay.
Senior officers appreciated the efforts of the police personnel involved in the operation, noting that persistent follow-up and coordinated intelligence gathering helped in locating the accused after several years.
Police sources stated that efforts are continuing to trace and apprehend other accused persons involved in pending criminal cases who have failed to appear before courts.
Authorities reiterated that strict action would be taken against individuals attempting to evade judicial proceedings and warned that absconding accused would eventually be tracked down through coordinated police operations.
