Mangaluru: Senior CPM leader Brinda Karat will take part in the ‘Adivasi Akrosha Rally’ on January 23 to champion the rights of the Koraga community. Organized by the Karnataka Tribal Rights Coordination Committee, the event highlights demands for land rights, employment opportunities, and a dignified life for the community. The rally will begin at Ambedkar Circle, with Karat addressing participants near the Clock Tower at 11:30 a.m.

According to CPM district secretary Muneer Katipalla, the Koraga community, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG), has long endured the oppressive feudal practice of ‘Ajalu,’ which he described as exploitative and dehumanizing. He emphasized that their population is dwindling, placing them on the brink of extinction. The ‘Rally of Outrage’ aims to shine a spotlight on their plight, with members dressed in traditional attire and carrying their tools as a symbol of resistance.

Katipalla urged people to stand in solidarity with the community, demanding equal rights and an end to their marginalization. “This is not a call for sympathy but a fight for justice and rightful opportunities that enable them to live with dignity,” he stated.

The committee is calling for job reservations for Koragas in public sector units, including industries in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. They also demand the implementation of the Mohammed Peer Report and land title deeds for PVTG farmers.
