Mangalore University came under sharp criticism in the Legislative Council on Monday, as allegations of large-scale irregularities were raised during the monsoon session.

MLC Manjunath Bhandari, speaking during Zero Hour, highlighted several controversial decisions taken by the university administration. He alleged that portions of university land had been illegally handed over to private institutions, violating established norms. He further claimed that the construction of the international hostel was marred by serious irregularities.

Bhandari also pointed out that funds allocated for the Belapu Study Centre were allegedly diverted to unrelated activities, defeating the very purpose for which the grants were sanctioned. Questioning the transparency of internal processes, he described recent appointments within the university as irregular and harmful to its credibility.

Calling for accountability, Bhandari urged the Minister for Higher Education to initiate a comprehensive probe into these allegations and take strict action against officials and administrators found responsible. He stressed that the issues raised were not limited to financial mismanagement but also threatened the reputation and smooth functioning of one of the region’s most respected academic institutions.

The allegations have sparked widespread concern, with stakeholders demanding corrective measures to ensure transparency, safeguard public funds, and protect the integrity of the university system. A formal response from the Higher Education Department is awaited.
