Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is awaiting a technical evaluation from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, before initiating the much-anticipated development of Dr. B R Ambedkar Circle. MCC Commissioner Ravichandra Naik confirmed that work will commence as soon as the report is received.
Previously known as Jyothi Circle, the MCC council has officially approved renaming it as Dr. B R Ambedkar Circle. The resolution was discussed in a council meeting on February 27, following which it was forwarded to the state government for approval.
The project is a collaborative effort between Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) and MCC. However, delays in its execution have raised concerns. Former corporator A C Vinayaraj voiced his disappointment over the prolonged wait at the last council meeting of the BJP’s tenure, chaired by then-Mayor Manoj Kumar.
Vinayaraj emphasized the necessity of conducting a 24-hour traffic survey before proceeding with the development. He suggested gathering data on vehicular movement from Balmata Road, Bunts Hostel Road, and New Balmata Road (towards Falnir), along with pedestrian footfall at the circle. MCC officials assured that the survey would be completed soon, and work will be carried out based on NITK’s findings.
The decision to name the circle after the architect of the Indian Constitution was first passed in a council meeting on November 28, 2024. The proposal was later reviewed by the town planning standing committee on January 4.
