Animal rights activist Tauseef Ahmed filed a complaint against alleged mistreatment of animals at the ongoing Karavali Utsava, held from December 21 to January 19. In his December 30 letter, Ahmed detailed instances of animal cruelty displayed at the exhibition, including dogs, birds, ducks, iguanas, and others.
He highlighted that these animals were confined in cramped cages, subjected to loud noises, overcrowding, and rough handling by visitors. Both children and adults reportedly poked, teased, and mishandled the animals, causing them severe distress. Ahmed also criticised inadequate food, water, and sanitation for the animals, describing it as a violation of animal welfare laws.
Calling for immediate action, he urged the deputy director of animal husbandry and veterinary services to remove all live animals from the event and investigate the organisers for potential legal violations. Public support poured in for Ahmed’s efforts, with many expressing relief over the intervention.
Responding to the complaint, Dr. Arun Kumar Shetty N, deputy director of the animal husbandry department, inspected the site and ensured the immediate removal of live animals. Authorities are expected to tighten regulations to prevent similar incidents in future events.
