Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada District In-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao inaugurated a new state-of-the-art AstroTurf football stadium near Nehru Maidan on Wednesday, marking a significant addition to the city’s sporting infrastructure. Leaders showcase football skills
During the event, Minister Rao and Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader drew applause as they enthusiastically displayed their football skills on the freshly laid turf. Their participation added a lively touch to the inauguration, highlighting the government’s intent to promote sports culture at the grassroots level.
The Minister noted that football has a strong following in Mangaluru and the wider Dakshina Kannada district, and said that such modern facilities would encourage young talent to pursue the sport professionally. He emphasised the importance of creating safe, inclusive and well-maintained sports spaces for children, youth and local clubs.
Dignitaries attend the ceremony
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several prominent leaders and representatives from sports bodies. MLCs Dr. Manjunath Bhandari and Ivan D’Souza were present, along with MESCOM Chairperson Harish Kumar. District Football Association President DM Aslam, who has been closely associated with the development of football infrastructure in the region, also participated in the event.
Speaking on the occasion, officials expressed hope that the new AstroTurf stadium would become a hub for district-level and state-level tournaments. They added that such facilities would help nurture promising footballers and contribute to the growth of sports tourism in Mangaluru.
Boost to local sports ecosystem
The newly unveiled stadium is expected to benefit local clubs, school teams and aspiring athletes who earlier lacked access to high-quality training pitches. With the introduction of the AstroTurf surface, sportspersons can now train throughout the year, irrespective of weather conditions. This is likely to help improve the overall standard of football training and performance in the region.
District sports officials also mentioned that plans are underway to develop complementary facilities such as changing rooms, floodlights, seating arrangements, and dedicated spaces for coaching camps. These initiatives aim to transform the stadium into a well-equipped multi-purpose sports centre.
Conclusion
The inauguration of the AstroTurf football stadium marks a significant milestone in Mangaluru’s efforts to strengthen its sporting infrastructure. With government support, community enthusiasm and increasing investments in sports development, the city is poised to emerge as a vibrant centre for football and other athletic activities in the coming years.
