Bantwal: The Bantwal Advocates’ Association (R) hosted the 6th edition of ‘Kesar D Onji Dina’ (A Day in the Slush Field) on August 16, celebrating mud, memories, and meaningful tradition in the paddy fields of Sparsha Kalmandira premises, BC Road.

Presiding over the gathering, association president Advocate Richard Costa M reflected on the resilience of past generations. He urged participants to adopt nature-friendly habits beyond just the Aati season. “We know the struggles our elders faced. Let us embrace wholesome, traditional foods throughout the year, not only during Aati,” he said.

Cultural roots and scientific value

Chief guest Krishnamurthy, Principal Civil Judge and JMFC, Bantwal, encouraged youth to stay rooted in heritage. “The responsibility of protecting our culture lies with today’s generation. Only after coming to Dakshina Kannada did I realize the medicinal worth of Tulu Nadu’s cuisine,” he noted. Rajendra Prasad K S, Additional Civil Judge and JMFC, Bantwal, also graced the occasion.

Tradition over trends

Renowned author Renuka Kaniyur highlighted the deeper meaning of Aati. “This gathering has revived the soul of Tulu Nadu’s fading traditions. When rituals are seen scientifically, they endure across generations,” she said, stressing the need to shift perceptions of Tulu culture.

The event also celebrated achievement, with Vighneshwari Nayak, daughter of Advocate Sadashiva Nayak, being felicitated for clearing her CA exam in the first attempt.

Festive flavours and field games

Authenticity marked the celebration, with traditional touches like bellada neeru (jaggery water), panaka (herbal juice), kalase bhatta (native rice), kambala buffaloes, and ankeda roosters creating a vibrant atmosphere. Guests were treated to a grand Aati-style lunch, showcasing seasonal Tulu delicacies.

After the formalities, advocates joyfully played field games in the slushy paddy, rekindling childhood memories and strengthening camaraderie.

Narendranath Bhandari, secretary of the Association, welcomed the gathering, while Sundara Bachkere delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was skillfully compered by Advocates Deepak Peraje and Abhinaya Chidananda.
