Mangaluru is set to welcome the Basel Mission Archives Museum and Art Gallery within the Karnataka Theological College (KTC) premises in Balmatta, at an estimated cost of ₹8.17 crore. The Basel Mission, active in Karnataka since 1834, has left a deep imprint on the region’s language, literature, education, and industries.

The upcoming state-of-the-art facility will feature audio-guided tours, a personalised visitor experience, and a photo gallery with over 5,000 rare images capturing the traditional culture of South Canara. Archivist and KTC lecturer Fr Steevan Barker explained that the museum aims to share a historical treasure previously accessible only to researchers, enabling the public—especially youth—to appreciate the Basel Mission’s cultural preservation efforts.

KTC principal Fr (Dr) H M Watson noted that the project’s original budget of ₹4 crore rose to ₹8.17 crore after refining its 3D designs. Encouragement from educational institutions and organisations has bolstered confidence in raising the necessary funds.

Former archivist’s assistant Benet G Amanna, who served for nearly four decades, praised KTC’s relentless work in gathering manuscripts and artefacts from various schools, churches, and colleges. The collection will also showcase antiques from the Basel Mission Press and Tile Factory.

Architect Guulshan Roy described the museum’s design as a blend of historical reverence and modern aesthetics—an inclusive community space that will also host exhibitions by emerging artists. The project, bridging Karnataka’s past and future, is expected to be completed within a year.
