The discovery of beef waste in the Mrityunjaya River in Belthangady Taluk has ignited strong reactions from Hindu organizations, leading to a planned protest rally on January 6. The river, a tributary of the Netravati River, was reportedly contaminated with beef waste a few days ago, prompting activists to raise alarms. However, despite bringing the issue to the authorities’ attention, they claim no significant action has been taken to apprehend those responsible.

VHP South Region joint secretary Sharan Pumpwell took to Facebook, expressing concern over the potential contamination of the Netravati River, which is significant to the religious community due to its proximity to the Dharmasthala bathing ghats. “If beef waste is dumped into the Mrityunjaya stream, it will pollute the Netravati River, disrespecting Hindu religious sentiments,” he said, urging the police to act swiftly.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Pumpwell also pointed out that 15 days had passed without any arrests. He criticized Congress leaders, who previously emphasized compassion towards elephants, for remaining silent on this issue. The Bajrang Dal is set to hold a ‘Kakkinje Chalo’ protest on January 6 to condemn the inaction of authorities.

Belthangady MLA Harish Poonja condemned the ongoing illegal cattle trafficking and slaughter, drawing parallels to the protection of elephants. He called for stronger action against cattle slaughter. BJP leader Basangouda R. Patil Yatnal also voiced his anger, criticizing the district administration and Pollution Control Board for their failure to address the issue, despite their strict regulations during festivals.
