Puttur: A troubling situation unfolded at Ajjikallu Government Higher Primary School in Olamogru village, Puttur taluk, after students developed skin irritation upon using water from a school tank that had mysteriously turned blue.

The incident came to light on Wednesday morning when staff noticed the unusual discoloration of the tank water, typically drawn from a borewell and used for washing and sanitation. Soon after using the water, several students complained of itching on their hands and feet, prompting quick intervention from the school authorities.

Headmistress Chitra Rai stated that the tank had been cleaned and refilled with fresh borewell water just a day prior. “We immediately informed the health department when we saw the water’s color and students started showing symptoms,” she confirmed.

A swift response followed, with a team led by SDMC president Ganesh Mundovumule, Grama Panchayat president Triveni Pallattaru, and CHO Vidyashree visiting the premises, along with Asha worker Sarojini and panchayat member Mahesh Rai Keri, to inspect the situation.

Health officials collected samples of the suspicious water for lab testing to identify the source of contamination. While natural discoloration is being explored, foul play has not been ruled out, raising concerns about deliberate tampering.

The incident has sparked alarm among parents and villagers, reigniting discussions about the safety of drinking and utility water in rural schools. Authorities are awaiting lab results, with assurances of prompt action based on findings.
