In a recent decision, buses traveling from Clock Tower towards Hampankatta, Bautagudda, and K S Rao Road in Mangaluru are now allowed to stop at the Hampankatta Junction (Signal) to pick up passengers. This move, which permits buses to halt at both the junction and the newly constructed shelter, has led to renewed traffic congestion in the area.

The Hampankatta Junction is a critical point for nearly all private city buses, express buses, and KSRTC buses departing from the State Bank bus stand. Historically, this spot has been a favored location for passengers to board buses. However, two years ago, the reinstallation of signal lights at the junction caused significant traffic disruptions, leading the police to prohibit buses from stopping at the signal. Barricades were installed to prevent passengers from standing near the signal.

In response to the congestion, a new bus shelter was constructed in front of Mangalore University College, just before the signal. Buses were directed to stop at this shelter, which temporarily alleviated traffic issues and facilitated smoother vehicle movement, particularly for those taking the free left turn.

Now, with the removal of the barricades, buses have resumed stopping at the signal, adding to the traffic woes. The dual stopping points—the signal and the new shelter—offer passengers more options but have also brought back congestion challenges at the busy junction.
