Mangaluru: In a key development for education infrastructure in coastal Karnataka, the Ministry of Education has confirmed central support for the repair of government schools in Dakshina Kannada affected by monsoon-related damage. The announcement came in response to an unstarred question raised by MP Captain Brijesh Chowta in the Lok Sabha today.
MP Chowta had sought information on the status of over 290 rain-affected schools and requested urgent intervention from the Centre for reconstruction and repair. He also stressed the need for a fast-track mechanism for restoring school infrastructure in disaster-prone regions.
In its official reply, the Ministry stated that 11 government schools in Dakshina Kannada have been sanctioned for major repair works under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme for 2023–24 and 2024–25, based on entries in the PRABANDH portal.
The Ministry emphasized that Samagra Shiksha allows States and UTs the flexibility to prioritize funding based on local needs and urgency. Additionally, disaster-resilient infrastructure guidelines have been issued in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to ensure timely restoration of educational facilities.
Reacting to the reply, Captain Brijesh Chowta welcomed the approval but noted that it addresses only a small fraction of the total damage. “I will continue to push for expanded coverage and quicker approvals for all impacted schools in Dakshina Kannada,” he stated.
