A violent confrontation erupted at Mangaluru District Prison on Tuesday afternoon when undertrial inmates from A Barrack allegedly stormed the kitchen and attacked fellow prisoners on cooking duty, triggering widespread disorder and damage.
The incident unfolded around 2:15 PM, when inmates from A Barrack forcefully entered the kitchen area, reportedly assaulting food-preparing inmates. This provoked unrest in B Barrack, where prisoners began shouting and attempting to breach their iron gate.
As the situation escalated, inmates from B Barrack vandalized ten CCTV cameras, tore out wiring, and damaged the mobile jammer antenna, according to prison officials. The government property loss is estimated at Rs 1 lakh.
A few inmates sustained minor injuries and were treated at Government Wenlock Hospital. Prison Superintendent B. Suresh, present at the facility during the clash, promptly responded to the scene and later reviewed the damage with senior officials.
The Barke police have registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 and the Karnataka Prison Discipline and Lawful Procedures (KPDLP) Act. A full investigation is currently underway.
Significantly, this marks the second consecutive day of inmate violence at the prison. A similar clash on Monday had also resulted in injuries and damage to prison infrastructure, raising serious concerns over internal security and inmate management.
