Fluctuating weather patterns have led to unexpected warmth across the coastal districts, disrupting the usual winter chill in Mangaluru, Udupi, and nearby areas. While January-end and February are typically cooler months, afternoon temperatures have been noticeably higher this year.
Meteorologists attribute this anomaly to delayed cold winds from China and Russia, which usually reach the region by early December. Additionally, unseasonal monsoon rains altered winter patterns. While Dakshina Kannada and Udupi received normal monsoon rainfall, it failed to enhance winter intensity.
For extreme cold, northeast winds must bring in chilly air. However, increased cloud cover has trapped atmospheric heat, preventing the usual drop in temperatures. Weather experts note that cloud movements from East Asia have disrupted the release of radiation, further contributing to the warmth.
Health concerns are rising as fluctuating temperatures create ideal conditions for infections. Doctors report an increase in cases of cold, cough, fever, throat infections, breathing issues, nasal congestion, chest tightness, dry skin, allergies, and asthma. The weakened winter has lowered immunity levels, making people more susceptible to seasonal illnesses.
Despite the heatwave, meteorologists predict that cold winds may return in the coming days, possibly intensifying winter before the season ends.
