Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada District Congress President Harish Kumar has questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence regarding developments linked to the internationally discussed Jeffrey Epstein case and criticised the central government’s foreign policy during a press conference held in Mangaluru.
Addressing reporters at the Congress Bhavan in the city, Harish Kumar alleged that several influential global leaders have been linked to discussions surrounding the Epstein case and said the issue has raised questions among sections of the public.
He claimed that speculation has emerged in some quarters suggesting that the names of prominent political figures could appear in documents related to the case.
“People are beginning to ask questions about why Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not addressed such serious issues through a press conference,” Harish Kumar said, adding that the Prime Minister should clarify matters of national concern directly to the public.
Criticism of Centre’s foreign policy
The Congress leader also criticised the Union government’s approach to foreign policy and international relations.
Harish Kumar alleged that India’s current diplomatic stance appears to be influenced by external pressure, particularly in matters related to global energy trade.
He further claimed that India’s decision to stop purchasing oil from Russia at discounted prices has created difficulties for the country’s energy sector.
According to him, earlier arrangements allowed India to procure crude oil at relatively lower rates, which benefited the national economy and helped manage fuel prices.
“By following external directions regarding oil purchases, the country is now facing challenges in securing oil at favourable prices,” he said.
Questions over oil supply situation
During the press conference, Harish Kumar also raised questions regarding the government’s handling of the oil supply situation.
He asked why the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) had reportedly been invoked if the government maintained that sufficient oil reserves were available in the country.
“If the government says there is no shortage and that reserves are adequate, then why were emergency measures such as ESMA brought into effect?” he asked.
He said the government should provide transparent information to the public regarding the country’s energy reserves and supply situation.
Call for transparency
Harish Kumar emphasised the need for transparency and communication from the central leadership on matters that may affect the country’s international relations and economic stability.
He urged the government to address concerns raised by the opposition and provide clear explanations regarding policy decisions related to foreign affairs and energy security.
The Congress leader said that open dialogue and accountability are essential in a democratic system, particularly when national issues and international developments are involved.
Conclusion
The remarks made by the Dakshina Kannada Congress president reflect ongoing political debate over India’s foreign policy and energy strategy.
While the Centre has not responded to the specific allegations raised during the press conference, political discussions around international relations and domestic policy decisions continue to remain a significant point of contention between the ruling government and opposition parties.
