On Monday, Dakshina Kannada district police initiated a major speed detection operation aimed at curbing speeding violations. The operation involved deploying five mobile speed detection radar guns capable of measuring vehicle speeds from up to 100 meters away.
Within the city police commissionerate limits, more than 10 cases of speeding were registered on the first day of the operation. Three radar guns were specifically allocated to monitor and enforce speed limits within these limits.
In Bantwal, traffic police utilized speed detection radar guns at Ramalkatte on NH 75. Led by Bantwal traffic police SI Sutesh K P, the operation resulted in 62 cases and the collection of Rs 65,000 in fines. The police have indicated that similar operations will extend to other roads in the area.
Despite the enforcement efforts, there has been public criticism regarding the clarity of speed limit signage. Many motorists have expressed frustration, noting that speed limit boards are often obscured by dirt, rendering the speed limits unreadable. This issue has led to questions about the fairness of the fines issued during the operation.
The police have assured that they are working to address these concerns and improve the visibility of speed limit signs. Meanwhile, the speed detection operation is expected to continue as part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety.
