Mangaluru: In a significant operation, Vittal police seized nearly 1.9 kg of suspected explosive materials from a residence near Vittal following credible intelligence about illegal storage and preparation of hazardous substances.
The raid was carried out on the night of April 13 after police received information that a local resident, identified as Jagadeesh Poojary, was allegedly preparing explosive materials at a location in Amai near Kambalabettu in Vittal. Authorities also learned that explosive components were being stored within the premises without adhering to mandatory safety protocols.
Raid conducted on credible tip-off
Acting swiftly on the information, Sub-Inspector B S Nayak of Vittal Police Station, along with his team, conducted a search operation at the residence. During the inspection, police recovered approximately 1.9 kilograms of suspicious explosive-like substances from the site.
Officials stated that the materials were stored in a manner that posed potential risks to nearby residents, raising concerns about public safety.
Accused taken into custody
Following the seizure, the accused was taken into custody for further legal action. Police are currently interrogating him to ascertain the purpose behind the preparation and storage of the explosive materials, as well as to determine whether there are any links to larger networks or illegal activities.
Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional individuals being involved and are continuing their probe.
Case registered under multiple laws
A case has been registered at Vittal Police Station under relevant provisions of the Explosives Act, 1884 and the Explosive Substances Act, 1908. Additionally, charges have been filed under Section 288 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with negligent conduct endangering human life or personal safety.
Police officials said these provisions carry serious penalties, reflecting the gravity of the offence.
