Mangaluru: Father Muller College of Allied Health Sciences (FMCOAHS), in association with its NSS wing, organised an impactful awareness programme on anti-ragging and substance abuse on April 20, 2026, reinforcing its commitment to a safe, disciplined, and drug-free campus.

The initiative aimed to sensitise students, particularly first-year entrants, about the importance of maintaining a respectful academic environment and adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Awareness on anti-ragging policies

The programme began with a session on anti-ragging policies led by Dr. Nagesh K. R., Professor of Forensic Medicine at Father Muller Medical College and Convener of the Anti-Ragging Committee.

He explained the serious consequences of ragging, relevant legal provisions, and the importance of fostering empathy and mutual respect among students. The session witnessed active participation, with students taking a pledge to ensure a ragging-free campus.

Focus on substance abuse prevention

The second session was conducted under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, highlighting the growing concern of substance abuse among youth and the need for awareness and prevention.

Chief Guest Mrs. Geetha D. Kulkarni, ACP, City Crime Records Bureau, delivered an insightful address focusing on both cyber safety and substance abuse. She cautioned students about online frauds, shared emergency helpline information, and presented data indicating the rising trend of drug-related cases in the region.

Encouraging responsible youth leadership

In her motivational speech, Mrs. Kulkarni urged students to become responsible citizens and active participants in the fight against substance abuse. She emphasised the importance of discipline, informed decision-making, and youth leadership in building a safer society.

Rev. Dr. Michael Santhumayor, Administrator of FMCOAHS, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the serious consequences of drug abuse. He shared key guidelines for discipline, personal growth, and overall development of students in allied health sciences.

Pledge and programme conclusion

The programme concluded with an anti-drug pledge led by Ms. Valerie Lobo, NSS Programme Officer. The vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Renita, NSS Student Coordinator, followed by the National Anthem.

The event was coordinated by Dr. Shivashankara A. R., Principal and Chairperson of the Anti-Ragging Committee, along with Dr. Nirmala Kumari, Convener, Ms. Valerie Ann Lobo, NSS Programme Officer, and Mr. Ajay Chand, Deputy NSS Programme Officer.

The programme was compered by Ms. Adele D’Souza, NSS volunteer.
