Mangaluru: Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH) has taken a major step forward in cardiac care with the inauguration of two advanced technologies—Intravascular Ultrasound Imaging (IVUS) and the Rotablator system—at its Cath Lab on April 24, 2026.

The addition of these state-of-the-art systems strengthens the hospital’s capabilities in handling complex cardiac conditions and reinforces its position as a leading centre for specialised heart care in the region.

Advanced systems inaugurated

The newly installed equipment was blessed and commissioned by Rev. Fr. Faustine Lucas Lobo, Director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI), in the presence of Rev. Fr. George Jeevan Sequeira, Administrator of FMMCH.

The inauguration marked a significant milestone in the hospital’s journey towards adopting cutting-edge medical technologies.

Commitment to innovation in cardiology

Dr. Pradeep Pereira, Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiology, delivered the introductory address, highlighting the department’s steady progress and commitment to innovation.

He emphasised the need for continuous advancements in cardiology to meet the growing complexity of cardiac cases and improve patient outcomes.

IVUS technology enhances precision

Dr. H. Prabhakar, Chief Interventional Cardiologist, provided insights into the newly introduced systems. He explained that the Boston Scientific AVVIGO™+ Mobile System, an advanced IVUS platform, offers high-resolution imaging and AI-assisted diagnostics.

This technology enables precise visualisation of coronary arteries, allowing cardiologists to perform angioplasty procedures with greater accuracy and improved outcomes.

Rotablator system for complex cases

Dr. Prabhakar also elaborated on the Rotablator (ROTA PRO) system, designed for treating heavily calcified coronary arteries. The device uses a diamond-coated burr rotating at speeds of up to 2 lakh revolutions per minute, enabling effective plaque modification.

This enhances stent delivery and expansion, making it particularly beneficial in complex cardiac interventions. He expressed gratitude to the institution’s management for supporting the acquisition of such advanced facilities.

Presence of key medical professionals

The event was attended by several senior medical professionals, including Dr. Ashok Jain, Dr. Jostol Pinto, Dr. Anthony Sylvan D’Souza, Dean of Father Muller Medical College, Dr. Uday Kumar, Medical Superintendent of FMMCH, and Dr. Anand K. T., Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon.

Cath Lab Nurse In-charge Mrs. Rita Monteiro, along with faculty and staff members, were also present.

Focus on accessible and compassionate care

In his presidential address, Rev. Fr. Faustine Lucas Lobo reiterated the institution’s mission of delivering compassionate and equitable healthcare. He emphasised that quality cardiac treatment should be accessible to all, regardless of financial background.

He also encouraged doctors and paramedical staff to uphold the values of service and compassion that define Father Muller’s healthcare mission.

Strengthening regional cardiac care

The introduction of IVUS and Rotablator technologies marks a significant advancement in cardiac treatment capabilities at FMMCH. These systems are expected to improve diagnostic accuracy, enhance treatment precision, and reduce procedural risks.

This development further strengthens the hospital’s role as a centre of excellence in cardiac care, offering advanced and affordable treatment options to patients in Mangaluru and the surrounding regions.
