Mangaluru: Police in Mangaluru intercepted a vehicle and rescued five cattle that were allegedly being transported illegally and in an inhumane manner near Badaga Edapadavu village in the early hours of Wednesday.
The incident took place close to Shastavu Shri Bhuthanatheshwara Temple, within the jurisdiction of Bajpe Police Station.
Interception following tip-off
According to police sources, the operation was carried out based on a tip-off received from members of the Bajrang Dal. Acting swiftly on the information, a police team set up surveillance in the area and intercepted a car at around 4:30 am.
Upon stopping the vehicle, the occupants reportedly abandoned the car and fled the scene, taking advantage of the early morning darkness. Police immediately secured the vehicle and began inspection.
Cattle found in cruel conditions
During the inspection, officers discovered five cattle crammed inside the vehicle in what officials described as a cruel and unsafe manner. The animals were reportedly being transported without adherence to legal guidelines or welfare norms.
Authorities rescued the cattle and arranged for their safe relocation. Veterinary checks are expected to be conducted to assess their condition and ensure proper care.
Police emphasised that illegal transportation of cattle, especially under inhumane conditions, is a serious offence and will be dealt with strictly under the law.
Vehicle and weapon seized
The vehicle involved in the incident has been identified as a Toyota Fortuner. During the search, police also recovered a weapon from inside the car, raising further suspicion about the intent of the accused.
The seized vehicle has been taken into custody for further examination, and forensic checks may be conducted if required as part of the investigation.

Following the incident, police have launched a manhunt to trace and apprehend the absconding suspects. Efforts are underway to identify the individuals involved, including tracing ownership details of the vehicle and analysing available evidence.
