The Diocese of Mangalore recently celebrated the ordination of five deacons into the priesthood at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Alangar, Moodbidri. This significant occasion, held outside the usual cathedral, was a heartfelt request from the ordinandi themselves, making the ceremony more personal and accessible to local communities. Bishop Dr Peter Paul Saldanha led the holy Eucharistic Mass, with the theme “Priest, Anointed with the Holy Spirit, a Messenger of Hope.”

The five men who were ordained include:

  • Fr Melvin D’Souza (Nidpalli)

  • Fr Jeevan Shailesh Lobo (Belvai)

  • Fr Marwin Praveen Lobo (Alangar)

  • Fr Avith Pais (Maril)

  • Fr Vikas Pereira (Hospet)

  • The event attracted a large crowd of well-wishers, clergy, and religious. During the bishop’s homily, he spoke about the sacred vocation of priesthood, emphasizing the spiritual challenges and promises that come with the role, such as celibacy, obedience, and the ultimate sacrifice. He urged the congregation to continue supporting the new priests in their journey of faith.

Following the ordination, a brief felicitation ceremony took place, where the priests expressed gratitude towards their mentors, families, and the community. Their collective prayer is for the strength to fulfill their mission with dedication and love.
