Mangaluru: A landmark moment in the history of Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI) was witnessed on 3 June 2025 as the institution unveiled its much-awaited coffee table book, Touched by Angels: A Portrait of Father Muller Charitable Institutions. The launch marked 145 years of legacy, compassion, and healing, capturing the soul of one of Mangaluru’s most cherished medical institutions.

A celestial celebration of history

The book launch was graced by eminent Kannada writer and Sahitya Akademi awardee Shri Jayanth Kaikini as the chief guest, with Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop Emeritus of the Mangalore Diocese, presiding over the event. Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho, Director of FMCI, and Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo, Director Designate, patroned the milestone occasion.

Mr William Pais, the author and designer of the book, offered a reflective and academic walkthrough of its creation—acknowledging Fr Richard’s decisive support and Fr Ajith Menezes’ creative involvement, which gave the publication its distinctive tone and depth. Pais described the book as “a work of 150 years made page”, drawing from archives, memories, and the living ethos of FMCI.

A heavenly unveiling

The stage was set to resemble angelic wings, adorned with celestial motifs, adding to the symbolism of divine healing that FMCI represents. The book was unveiled amid cold fireworks, and its gold-hued cover glimmered in the hands of dignitaries—carrying within it the essence of a healing mission born in 1880.

Recognising the forces behind the book, Fr Ajith Menezes, Mr William Pais, and the Father Muller Medical College Alumni Association—under Past President Dr Archana Bhat and current President Dr Reshma Kini—were honoured for their contributions. The alumni association also handed over a cheque in support of the book’s publication.

A voice of humanity and healing

Delivering a moving address, Shri Jayanth Kaikini said, “FMCI has transcended caste, creed, and religion. It is a spiritual space where peace and life coexist.” Comparing the FMCI workforce to white pigeons, he praised the institution’s ethos of healing both body and mind. He reflected on Fr Augustus Muller’s month-long voyage from Germany to Mangalore, calling him a “Master’s Healer” whose mission has touched countless lives.

Kaikini likened FMCI’s growth to a test cricket match—slow, steady, and deep-rooted like a banyan tree, offering shelter to all. He urged everyone to carry this healing spirit into the world, reminding them that “God lives in humanity.”

A beacon of mercy and resilience

Bishop Emeritus Dr D’Souza, himself a former President of FMCI, traced its journey from humble beginnings to becoming a beacon of medical excellence. He spoke of the trials of establishing new colleges, staffing, and securing affiliations, emphasising the unwavering faith and determination of the Directors and Sisters of Charity who led the way.

Dr Reshma Kini, President of the FMMC Alumni Association and Professor of Pathology, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing heartfelt appreciation to all involved.

Mrs Jyothi Pinto, FMCI’s HR Manager, emceed the event with elegance and poise, weaving together the evening with grace.
