A Right to Information (RTI) request has unveiled that ex-Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Mangaluru, Ramegowda, allegedly occupied Mangalore University’s Kaveri Guest House for over a year without clearing full dues.
Ramegowda, who retired recently, insists he had authorization from the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar to reside there while attending official university gatherings. Nonetheless, official records confirm that he remained in Room No. 6 for 362 days, spanning July 3, 2023, to December 2024, accumulating a ₹1,000-per-day lodging fee.
In response to allegations, Ramegowda admitted that for 195 extra days, he owes ₹68,250, as government employees are charged a reduced rate of ₹350 per day. He claimed to have submitted a formal request for a concession on this amount, yet Mangalore University has not addressed his plea since February 7. Additionally, he argued that his accommodation during election duty should be covered by the district administration.
Faculty members and university officials question why the administration failed to recover pending dues, emphasizing significant financial setbacks for the institution. Critics argue that such prolonged occupancy without full payment is unjustifiable, given the university’s strained financial situation.
Defending himself, Ramegowda asserts that his stay is being exaggerated to shift focus from deeper mismanagement issues within Mangalore University, which he claims to have challenged during his tenure.
